Medicine and Health Sciences Library (MHCL) which was established in 1998 is a branch library of Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad. It is located within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences complex, which can accommodate up to 200 seats. The objective of its formation is to support learning, teaching and research at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Currently the library collection consists of over 25,000 copies of printed materials covering textbooks and journals, over 3000 titles of e-journals and audio visual collections.
Medicine and Health Sciences Library has a Clinical Library at the 9th Floor of Grand Seasons Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. It can accommodate up to 20 seats and has a collection of 2,000 copies of printed materials. This library provides information services for students and staff at the Clinical Campus.

MHCL’s collection comprises of materials in the fields of medicine, health science and other related disciplines. Our materials are classified into 2 classification scheme, i.e. National Library of Medicine Classification Scheme for materials in the field of medicine and health science and Library of Congress Classification Scheme for materials in other disciplines.
1. GENERAL BOOK COLLECTION
The general book collection consists of text-books, proceedings of conferences, reports, books for leisure reading, etc.. This collection includes materials in various subject areas.
Location : The books are located on the Level 2 and can be located by checking the online Library Catalogue (VIRTUA WebOPAC).
2. RED-SPOT COLLECTION
This collection consists of important text-books recommended by lecturers as reading materials for courses taught at the University and essential materials which are limited in number and are heavily used by students.
Location : This collection is located on the Level 1.
3. REFERENCE COLLECTION
This collection consists primarily of dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, manuals, almanacs, atlases, directories, statistical reports and bibliographies.
Location : The collection is located on Level 2. Books in this collection has the location symbol 'r' in the call number. Reference materials are non-circulating and are to be used in the library only.
4. SERIALS COLLECTION
There are three different categories of journals :
- Current Journals: This collection consists of the latest issues of journals subscribed, as well as those received as gifts or exchange. The materials are displayed at Serials Collection area, Level 2.
- Unbound Issues of Journals : This collection is kept in the Back Issues Room which is located on the Level 2. Requests to use them should be made at the Service Counter, Level 2.
- Bound journals : Bound journals are shelved according to class number on the Level 2. They have the symbol 'btb' affixed as the location symbol.
5. ONLINE DATABASES
Subscribed Online Databases is the online databases and journals subscribed by PSAS Library which can be accessed by the members. There are about 200 online journal titles ready to be accessed at anytime. The online journals provide a wide variety of relevant information of the current issues, research and publications that assist users in completing their literature review of the thesis, project papers, assignments, and etc.
6. THESES/PROJECT REPORTS
This collection comprises Ph.D and Masters theses of faculty postgraduate students and academic staff, final year students' project papers.
Location: This collected is located on Level 1 and shelved according to the academic programs. They are to be used strictly in the library.
7. AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS
This collection comprises of CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and diskettes.
Location : The materials are kept at the Circulation Counter, Level 1. Requests for use should be made at the Counter. The materials have the symbol 'bpd' affixed as the location symbol. Almost all of the materials are accessible through online Library Catalogue (VIRTUA WebOPAC).
8. NEWSPAPERS
Libary subscribes the following printed newspapers:
- Berita Harian
- Harian Metro
- Malaysian Nanban
- Nanyang Siang Pau
- New Straits Times
- Sin Chew Daily
- Tamil Nesan
- The Star
- Utusan Malaysia
The newspapers are displayed in the Leisure Reading Area, Ground Level.

1. Reference Service
This service provides users with the necessary basic information which will help them in accessing the information resources through Library Catalog (OPAC) and databases effectively.

3. User Education Programme
The programme aims to teach and assist users to effectively utilize all information sources, services and facilities offered by the library. This programme is divided into 3 categories:
i) Library Orientation Sessions
A two hour session for the new intake of students. The session is conducted at the beginning of the first semester of the new intake. The topics includes a brief introduction on the collectiions, services and facilities available and a hands-on session on the use of the OPAC.
ii) Scheduled Classes
Scheduled classes are conducted from time to time for staff and students. The schedules of the programme will be posted at notices at the Faculty, Residential colleges in addition to the Library website.
iii) Programme On Request
This is an on-going programme offered to all students and staff upon request. Classes will be conducted by the Faculty Liaison Librarian. Classes consists of the following modules:
- Information Search Strategies.
- Library Catalogue.
- Electronic Databases / Online Journals.
- CD-Rom
