Overview

OVERVIEW

Collection assessment is “an organized process for systematically analyzing and describing a library’s collection”. Assessments are conducted to provide several kinds of important information to libraries. They help clarify the library’s goals in the context of its mission and budget, supply data used to set funding priorities, and build a base for long-range planning and administration (State Library of Arizona, 2013).

Collection assessment and maintenance is a high priority job duty for library professionals. Many strategies are available for assessing collections, regardless of the kind of library or size of the collection.

This workshop is the continuation of “Collection Assessment Workshop: Value for Money”, held on 4-5 September 2012, at Mines Wellness Hotel, Seri Kembangan, Selangor. The workshop will act as a guide for librarians. It is the aim of the workshop to enhance the content of last year’s workshop by having a “hands on” sessions. Besides, a lot of positive response received from the participants suggesting for more in depth approach focusing on the techniques that can be applied in carrying out a collection assessment. Hence, it is felt that to have the 2nd series of the workshop is timely.

The assessment technique introduced in the workshop will focus on printed collection. The two types of assessment techniques that will be covered are circulation and subject analysis. However, the workshop will also touch on technique used for digital resources.

For purpose of exercises, participants are required to bring along the actual date.

EXPECTED OVERCOMES

By participating in the workshop, participants will enrich their professional knowledge on collection development. Also participants will learn and will be able to practise the assessment technique introduced to be implemented in their organization.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Librarians (academic, special and public libraries), information professionals, library managers, lecturers, students, library policy makers and others involved in collection development of library materials. Participants from both public and private institutions are most welcome.
